For breakfast this morning we visited Maison Mathis, located on Elm Street in New Haven, right in Yale University. It’s a modern-chic Belgian bakery and cafe, known for its selection of breakfast, lunch, juices, and coffee. It’s in a popular area and in the center of Yale, across the street from New Haven’s Apple store and Yale’s Barnes and Nobles. They open as early as 8:00 am until 9:00 pm and have such a cozy atmosphere with fast service and clean sitting areas. They also have some outdoor seating if you want to enjoy the sun while eating your meal or drinking your coffee.
We ordered two waffles from their waffle menu, the Fresh Fruit Waffle with sliced fruit, maple syrup, whipped cream, and powdered sugar. Along with the Chocolate Waffle with chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and powdered sugar. Both were deliciously sweet and crispy, they have a wide variety of different waffles which is nice to see for a breakfast menu! It also came out very fast and was a good size for the price.
We also ordered some French Toast with powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh fruit, and whipped cream. Which was smaller than expected but overall tasted good. Then a savory breakfast entree, the Avocado Benedict with toasted English muffin halves, layered with avocado and roasted tomatoes, poached organic eggs, and hollandaise sauce. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the avocado was fresh, it also came with a side of kale salad which was a nice addition to the meal.
The atmosphere was comfortable and the large windows made the cafe look beautiful with the sunlight beaming in, perfect for sunny days and meeting up with some friends. It also seemed like a popular coffee spot for people to spend their time studying or working while drinking expresso. They have a lot of seating inside and some tables outside and the service was quick and convenient. When ordering at the front you are handed a number to place on your table so they can serve your food to your table, and drinks are to be picked up at the counter.
I would come here again for lunch next time and take a try at their smoothies or juices, this time I got an Iced Chai Tea Latte which tasted great, and I also had some freshly squeezed orange juice, they didn’t give me much but it tasted refreshing! I can see why this place is popular, the location is amazing and they have a huge selection of food. It was clean and spacious which is great as there doesn’t feel like there’s too much going on around you or overcrowded. The windows also make the vibes in here feel cozy and it’s rather peaceful than loud or busy compared to other cafes and bakeries.
I am looking forward to visiting this place again and trying more from their menu!
